Rooted in the North Fork: Why Place Matters

September 23, 2026

Spend enough time in a vineyard and you start paying attention to things you might otherwise overlook.

How quickly the fog lifts in the morning. Which direction the breeze is coming from. How cool the nights have been. Whether the rain came at exactly the right time—or exactly the wrong one. When you grow grapes for wine, all of those little things matter. And here on the North Fork, being surrounded by water shapes nearly everything we do.

The Long Island Sound sits to our north and Peconic Bay to our south, giving us a maritime climate with coastal breezes, warm days, cool nights, and a long growing season. That allows our grapes to ripen slowly while holding onto the natural acidity and freshness that have become such an important part of our wines.

It’s one of the reasons we’ve always said that great wine starts in the vineyard.

You can see that relationship especially clearly in Pinot Blanc, a variety that has been part of our vineyard for decades and has become one of the wines we’re best known for. Its bright fruit, refreshing acidity, and mineral character feel distinctly at home here.

That same climate gives our sparkling wines the freshness and acidity they need, while Cabernet Franc develops beautiful fruit alongside the savory character that makes it such a natural fit for the dinner table.

It also gives us room to experiment.

Over the years, we’ve planted varieties that you might not expect to find on Long Island, including Lagrein and Teroldego—grapes with roots in Northern Italy that have found a surprisingly happy home in our vineyard. Part of the fun of farming here is continuing to learn what this land can do.

And after all these years, we’re still learning.

Every growing season is different, which means our job is to pay attention and respond to what the vineyard gives us. Some years are warmer. Some are cooler. Some make us very grateful for rain, and others make us wish it would stop.

We can’t control all of it—and we don’t try to.

Instead, we farm thoughtfully, harvest when the fruit is ready, and make decisions in the cellar that allow each wine to show its own character. For many of our whites, stainless steel helps preserve freshness and bright fruit. Thoughtful use of oak can bring texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine. Our traditional-method sparkling wines spend extended time on tirage, developing depth while holding onto the freshness that makes them so enjoyable to drink.

Different wines need different things. The common thread is balance.

That same long-term thinking carries into how we care for the vineyard. Our estate vineyards are Certified Sustainable, with practices focused on healthy soils, biodiversity, responsible farming, and caring for this land for the years ahead.

For us, sustainability isn’t separate from making good wine. The two go hand in hand. Healthy vineyards give us better fruit, and better fruit gives us more to work with in the cellar.

After decades of growing grapes here, we’ve also had the chance to watch the North Fork wine community grow alongside us. There’s a confidence developing around Long Island wine that we’re excited to be part of—not because we’re trying to make wines that taste like somewhere else, but because we’re continuing to discover what tastes right here.

That idea is at the heart of Rooted North. The climate, the vineyard, the surrounding farmland, the seasons, and even the pace of life here all leave their mark on what we make.

And every time we open a bottle, we get to share a little bit of that with you. We hope you can taste it!
